

The Department of Physical and Economic Geography was established in 2005 at the initiative of Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor G.M. Dzhanaleeva. Initially, it was part of the Department of Geography and Ecology, but on September 16, 2008, it gained the status of an independent scientific and educational unit by the order of the rector of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
Since its foundation, the department has been led by prominent specialists in the field of geography. From 2005 to 2010, the department was headed by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor G.M. Dzhanaleeva. From 2010 to 2012, it was led by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor A.A. Saipov. From 2012 to 2014, the head of the department was Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor M.N. Musabayeva. From 2014 to 2019, the department was led by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor K.T. Saparov. From 2019 to 2025, the head of the department was PhD, Acting Professor N.E. Ramazanova. Currently, the department is headed by PhD, Senior Lecturer K.M. Saginov.
The department trains highly qualified specialists in geography and hydrology, employing modern educational methodologies and adhering to international educational standards. The educational process is based on a competency-based approach, enabling graduates to successfully integrate into the job market and pursue careers in scientific and pedagogical fields.
The strategic goal of the department is to ensure high-quality training for specialists in the fields of "Geography" and "Hydrology" at all levels of education. Implementing innovative teaching methods and continuously improving educational programs are key priorities in the department's development.

Bachelor’s programs: 6B05209 – “Geography”, 6B05210 – “Hydrology”, 6B01524 – “Geography Teacher Training”. Master’s programs: 7M05213 – “Geography”, 7M05210 – “Hydrology”, 7M01524 – “Geography Teacher Training”. Doctoral program: 8D05213 – “Geography”.
The department has a faculty consisting of 4 Doctors of Science, 7 Candidates of Science, and 12 PhDs, making up 69.7% of the total staff. All faculty members possess the necessary qualifications and academic degrees, confirming their right to teach and conduct scientific research.
The material and technical resources of the department meet modern standards, allowing students to receive a high-quality education and actively engage in scientific research. The department fosters international cooperation by maintaining strong partnerships with leading universities and research centers worldwide.
