The Department of Physical and Economic Geography was established in 2005 at the initiative of Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor G.M. Dzhanaleeva. Initially, it was part of the Department of Geography and Ecology, but on September 16, 2008, it gained the status of an independent scientific and educational unit by the order of the Rector of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
Since its foundation, the department has been headed by leading specialists in the field of geography and education. From 2005 to 2010, the department was headed by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor G.M. Dzhanaleeva. From 2010 to 2012, it was headed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor A.A. Saipov. From 2012 to 2014, the head of the department was Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor M.N. Musabayeva. From 2014 to 2019, the department was headed by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor K.T. Saparov. From 2019 to 2025, the head of the department was PhD, Acting Professor N.E. Ramazanova. From 2025 to 2026, the department was headed by PhD, Acting Associate Professor K.M. Saginov. Currently, the department is headed by PhD, Associate Professor A.E. Eginbayeva.
The main goal of the department is to train geographers and hydrologists in accordance with the new generation educational standards of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The educational process is based on a competency-based approach. The development and strengthening of scientific and pedagogical activities is also one of the key tasks of the department.
The department implements a three-level education system in the fields of “Geography” and “Hydrology”. The main goal is to improve the quality of education, introduce innovative teaching methods, and train competitive specialists.
Bachelor’s degree programs: 6B05209 – “Geography”, 6B05210 – “Hydrology”, 6B01524 – “Geography Teacher Training”. Master’s degree programs: 7M05213 – “Geography”, 7M05210 – “Hydrology”, 7M01524 – “Geography Teacher Training”. Doctoral program: 8D05213 – “Geography”.
The teaching staff of the department includes 3 Doctors of Science, 9 Candidates of Science, and 13 PhDs. Faculty members with academic degrees account for 75.8% of the total staff of the department. The professionalism of the teaching staff is confirmed by their academic degrees and academic titles.
The material and technical resources of the department meet modern requirements. This allows students to receive high-quality education and conduct scientific research. In addition, the department pays special attention to the development of international cooperation. Close ties have been established with foreign higher education institutions and research centers.
