The Faculty of Natural Sciences was established in 2009, initiating the independent development of systematic natural science education in the country. During its existence, it became one of the dynamically and steadily developing faculties of our university.
On December 29, 2025, by the decision of the Board of Directors of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, the Faculty of Natural Sciences was transformed into the Institute of Natural Sciences.
The activities of the Institute in training personnel in the natural sciences, research work, development plan, enrollment and graduation structure, staff, and material base are developed and modified in accordance with the tasks of society.
The Institute forms scientific and educational personnel in the fields of chemistry, geography, biotechnology, biology, and ecology.
According to the vision of the university, the transition to a research university became a serious challenge for the Institute, requiring a radical renewal of the content of university education in the field of natural sciences. The introduction of the modular educational program made it necessary to master dozens of new disciplines and update traditional ones, required changes in curricula, solving the problem of textbooks, and strengthening the practical orientation of graduate training.
Today the Institute is represented by the following departments:

Department of Management and Engineering in the Field of Environmental Protection.
At present, 2,702 students are studying at the Institute. Among them, 2,159 students are enrolled in the bachelor's program, 453 in the master's program, and 90 in the doctoral program.
The total teaching staff consists of 135 professors and lecturers, and more than 50 industry and business professionals are invited annually to teach as part-time faculty members. Every year, foreign scientists and professors from top universities teach in English on a short- and long-term basis.
The percentage of faculty members with academic degrees is 85%.
The Institute offers 30 educational programs: bachelor's degree – 10; master's degree – 15; doctoral degree – 5. Of these, 3 bachelor's degree programs and 4 master's degree programs are implemented in English. All doctoral programs are multilingual.
The Institute implements double-degree educational programs with leading universities such as RUDN University, Tomsk State University, Altai State University, Dubna State University, and Nanning State University (China).
The total number of graduates from the Institute since the establishment of the faculty exceeds 5,000 students, distributed by year as follows: 2024 – 521 students, 2023 – 566 students, 2022 – 776 students, 2021 – 509 students, 2020 – 499 students, 2019 – 472 students, 2018 – 561 students, 2017 – 460 students, 2016 – 355 students, 2015 – 467 students, 2014 – 264 students, 2013 – 245 students, 2012 – 168 students.
Currently, 37 research projects are being implemented at the Institute, including: State grant-funded projects (GFP) – 17, "Young Scientist" projects – 16, international projects – 1, program-targeted funding (PTF) – 3, as well as four teaching researchers and two researchers.
