
Round table «Carbon regulation and application of BAT in the Republic of Kazakhstan»


As part of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal program (SDG) of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, on April 5, a round table was held on the topic: “Carbon regulation and application of Best Available Technology (BAT) in the Republic of Kazakhstan”. There were invited speakers from the JSC “Institute of Economic Research” Deputy Chairman of the Board of Kuanysh Beisengazin, Head of Best Available Technology (BAТ) Bureau of NJSC "International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects" Bauyrzhan Abenov and Director of the Greenhouse Gas Inventory Department of JSC "Zhasyl Damu" Aiman Yesekina.
The round table was moderated by Ruslan Muratov, an expert on the system of trading carbon units of the Republic of Kazakhstan, senior lecturer of the Department of Ecological and Environmental Protection PhD Ruslan Muratov.
In his welcoming speech, the Dean of Natural Sciences Faculty Zharas Berdenov emphasized the importance of the university in implementing the idea of a carbon-neutral society and informed the round table participants about the adopted policy on sustainable development in L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
Kuanysh Beisengazin, in his report on the topic: “Strategy for achieving carbon neutrality of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2060,” noted that low-carbon development is a necessary condition for sustainable development and is aimed at preventing the catastrophic consequences of global climate change. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industrial processes will require the introduction of new technologies.
Issues of greening industrial enterprises that have a negative impact on the environment, prospects for the development of the concept of the best available techniques in the context of sustainable development, as well as experience in the application and implementation of Best Available Technology in foreign countries were presented by Bauyrzhan Abenov.
Aiman Yesekina presented the National Carbon Trading System of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which is a key tool for the country in achieving its goals of reducing emissions and promoting environmentally sustainable development.
As part of the adopted policy for the sustainable development of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in terms of activities in order to combat climate change, the Department of Environmental management and engineering announced an initiative to calculate the carbon footprint of university, which will allow to determine its greenhouse gas emissions and develop strategies to reduce them.
The round table became an important platform for the exchange of opinions and experiences among competent experts in the field of environmental protection, and students, master's and doctoral students gained a great understanding of the work of ecologists.
